Return of the Dove

I hadn't even realized she was gone. Just one of those things you don't notice when fall becomes winter and nature quiets down.

Last week I was sitting in my dining room, paying bills, organizing life. That's when I heard her. Her call outside the window was so crisp, so clear, so close. It startled me to stillness.

I went to the window to see if I could spy her. Her call was reaching deep into my soul, stirring what I didn't realize I was missing, and some of what I didn't need.

The next day I approached the bush where she was calling from, eager to get a glimpse. She fell silent. I retreated. She called again.

I will listen from a distance, taking what I need from her. Heeding her call.
My mourning dove.
